As a partnership with the North Carolina Department of
Health and Human Servicesin July 2007 we began working to replicate Common Ground’s Street to Home Initiative in Guilford County. Our Street to Home initiative enhances our traditional street outreach services through helping people living on the streets move directly into homes. The Housing Support Team works to identify and prioritize individuals who are living on the street that have been homeless for a long period of time, have disabling conditions, and are less likely to access housing resources in Guilford County. Once individuals are identified the Housing Support Team evaluates and negotiates housing options with those individuals, places them in a home and connects them with services available in our community.
Our “Common Ground” area is along Lee Street and South Elm Eugene Corridor. The Housing Support Team goes out quarterly before sunrise to count the number of people “camping” out.
- As of June 30, 2008, the Housing Support Team has moved 10 people from the area into housing and recorded a 22% decrease in the number of people experiencing homelessness sleeping in the area from the initial count in.
