I AM NOW, INC., a newly founded 501c 3 non-profit organization in Guilford County, is currently moving forward to tackle this problem one young adult at a time. The founding philosophy is "Helping Individuals From Where They Are NOW!" I AM Now, INC’s Non Resident program was launched in July 2008, and works with young adults who have experiencing homelessness that have a disability to place them in housing. The program provides mentoring, case management, and connection to supportive services.
Target Population
In order to qualify for the Non Resident program you must be an individual experiencing chronic homelessness between the ages of 18 and 21 and have one or more disabilities.
Conditions of Disability
• Serious Mental Illness
• Chronic Substance Abuser
• Developmental Disability
Referral Process
Participants will be selected through referrals from non- profit organizations, the school system, and through community outreach.
Young Adult Assessments
The young adult's independent living competencies will be identified using the Ansell-Casey Life Skills Assessments. The purpose of a life skills assessment is to provide the young adults with preparing for self-sufficiency. The assessment is used to be in conjunction with other information available to focus specifically on those areas of the young adult's life that are, or will, impact on their preparation for self-sufficiency. The assessment will assist in gaining understanding of the young adult's strengths and challenges so practical, concrete efforts can be made to achieve the goals to which the young adults seeks.
