Educating and Advocating for safe, decent, and affordable housing for everyone

The purpose of this initiative is to actively focus on ensuring that Guilford County residents have access to safe, decent and affordable housing. The initiative also provides education and training on landlord-tenant and Fair Housing laws, negotiating reasonable accommodations for individuals who may have a mental health illness, developmental disabilities and/or substance abuse disorder, and identifying funding opportunities to increase the availability of good housing stock that reach and meet the needs of our community to significantly reduce the homeless numbers in Guilford County.
In addition to accessing adequate housing, individuals and families are connected to other supports and services designed to help them maintain long term and permanent housing in our community. This enhances our efforts to ensure that Guilford County residents will have a greater opportunity to access resources and secure good housing stock with a minimum of difficulty. To support this commitment, several partnerships have been established with the Greensboro Housing Coalition, Family Service of the Piedmont, City of High Point Housing Coalition, Legal Aid of North Carolina,City of Greensboro, and Partners Ending Homelessness.
Thousands of people are affected daily by the problem of homelessness in North Carolina. In an effort to meet the temporary and long term needs of it’s homeless population, the Department of Health and Human Services allocated funding to Local Mental Health Entities strategically throughout the state to hire Housing Specialist to help accomplish this mission. Guilford County’s Guilford Center was one of the LMEs to receive this award. The Housing support specialist works to:
- Develop a Strategic Housing Plan that includes and inventory of local, existing housing for consumers; identify barriers that impedes affordable housing growth and develop strategies for filling those gaps between existing housing and housing needs.
- Train and educate consumers, service providers and families on accessing and maintaining affordable housing regarding NC landlord-tenant Fair Housing Laws and negotiating Reasonable Accommodation.
- Establish partnerships with other local, affordable housing and advocates.
- Develop positive working relationships with local Housing Authorities to ensure ongoing access to affordable housing for those who are chronically homeless.
